Summary

CULTURE SHOCK is a witty tale of mystery and romance with a large helping of southern hospitality.

Macy Holmes is a seventeen-year-old socially-isolated introvert since her best friend's death a year ago. When her family decides to move from Manhattan to the quaint country town of Bougainvillea, Florida, Macy finds she's in a completely different world. Macy is no longer the outsider hiding behind designer clothes when she is sought out by three strange students, one of whom she is particularly interested in. The more time she spends with Chad the more things don't add up. When his true identity is finally revealed, Macy is pulled into a supernatural society with its saturation of inhabitants residing in Bougainvillea.

You would think she has enough on her plate, but no, then her dreams become infiltrated by an external magical force, Macy and her band of supernatural misfits must find the culprit behind the magic-induced nightmares. They must dodge zombie assassins, shifty shape-shifters and high school bullies in order to stop this perpetrator before Macy, her friends or her parents pay the ultimate price.

Especially when Macy has the sneaking suspicion that these dreams are reality...

Excerpt

There were two guys and one girl. The girl had severely long red wavy hair and flawless fair skin. She was supermodel skinny. Heroin-addict supermodel skinny. Her back was to me so I couldn’t get a good look at her face.

The first boy was sitting next to her. His back also to me, but when I first caught them spying, I noticed something peculiar about this boy. He was wearing a black hoodie, with the drawstrings tied so tight, the hood was covering nearly his whole face. He had dark aviator glasses on and gloves. Seriously, it’s like ninety-something degrees outside. Why on earth would you wear gloves? His skin, what was showing of it anyways, was even paler than the girl’s.

Interview

1. What inspired you to write this book?
I experienced this horrific nightmare that left me shaking in fear with cold sweats, the whole nine. It felt so real and so darn scary, it took me a while to recover. This particular nightmare happens to be the climax for Culture Shock, my debut novel. After I was able to think straight after that freaky nightmare, I realized that it would be a great concept for a book, so I grabbed a dried-out green marker and a post-it note and jotted down the entire nightmare. That's how Culture Shock was born.

2. What characters do you connect with most?
I connect most with Macy, the main character, since she shares many of my personal attributes, but I feel a personal connection to all of them. I feel like they are my second family.

3. What's your favorite book-turned movie?
Let me just say...the book is ALWAYS better, but I enjoyed the Hunger Games much better than any other book-turned-movie.

4. If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?
Emma. She has a scary dangerous side to that sweet persona of hers, so she's definitely someone I'd like to have my back.

5. Can you tell us about any other books you're writing?
I'm in the middle of writing book 2, Shock Wave, in the Culture Shock Series and working on some sinister short stories that are comical at the same time.

6. What do you do in your spare time?
I have two kids, so I don't have much spare time, but when I do I either write, travel or hangout with my family, or do karaoke competitions with my crazy friends.

7. Who's your inspiration?
My inspiration is life in general. It's the ultimate muse. From the people who touch my life deeply and the places I visit, the things I do, it's all a part of what inspires me.

8. If you were stranded on a desert island which character do you want by your side?
Katsa from Graceling because that girl has some serious survival skills.

9. Team Edward or Jacob?
Jacob.

10. Team Peeta or Gale?
Peeta.

11. What are you reading now?
After Forever Ends, Melodie Ramone
